Running a Business From Home? Check How Your Insurance Fits

Explain the operation clearly and check how home and business insurance address equipment, visitors, professional services and interruption risks.

Taking freelance assignments, running an online shop or meeting clients at home can save commuting time and premises costs. It also gives your home another use. Having home insurance does not, on its own, establish how the business is protected.

Before starting or changing the operation, tell your broker and home insurer what you will actually do. Then confirm what can be covered and how. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada advises home-business owners to notify their insurer and review the protection their home policy provides. Government of Canada home insurance guide

1. Explain more than “I work from home”

That phrase can mean remote employment, independent consulting, storing online-shop inventory or receiving clients every day. An accurate description is more useful than calling the operation a small or low-risk business.

Prepare to explain:

Use this as a conversation checklist; the insurer will specify the application information it needs. If something seems borderline, ask and keep a written record of the response.

2. Where can a home policy leave gaps?

Business property may have only limited protection under an ordinary home policy. Liability arising from business activities also needs separate attention, and equipment away from the home requires a specific coverage check. Government of Canada's home-business insurance guidance

Try two hypothetical questions:

Ask your broker to connect the answers to the actual policy, endorsements, limits and exclusions rather than relying on a general assurance that the home is insured.

3. An endorsement or a separate business policy?

Some eligible operations can add home-business coverage to a residential policy. Others need separate commercial insurance. The choice depends on the activity, scale, property values, visitors and the insurer's underwriting criteria. Co-operators' home-business coverage explanation

Compare more than the premium. Check that the arrangement fits all the activities, visits and off-site work you have described, and ask how growth could affect eligibility.

Keep the home insurer informed even if separate commercial insurance is already in place. Both sides need the same accurate description to assess how the arrangements work together.

4. Separate the main coverage questions

Business property: List computers, tools, specialized equipment and inventory. Ask how they are insured at home, in transit and at off-site jobs.

Operational and professional liability: A visitor's injury and an allegation of negligent professional advice involve different exposures. If professional liability is appropriate, confirm which services are insured and check your profession's regulatory and contractual requirements. There is no single coverage package that fits every self-employed operation. Intact's explanation of home-business insurance options

Business interruption: Where purchased, income protection may respond when a qualifying insured loss temporarily interrupts operations. Fewer orders, poor trading results or closure for any reason should not be assumed to trigger it. Check the trigger, calculation, indemnity period and limits. Information and cyber risks: If you hold customer records or operate online, ask about privacy incidents, data recovery and cyber coverage. Insuring a device does not establish coverage for every information-related loss. Intact's data-breach and business-assistance coverage overview

5. Review the arrangement as the business changes

Receiving clients for the first time, holding more stock, buying equipment, hiring or expanding sales territories are reasons to contact your broker again. If you are already operating and are unsure what was disclosed, provide a complete description now and ask for confirmation of the next steps.

Undisclosed use can affect insurance. However, the mere existence of a home business does not establish that every loss will be denied or the whole policy is necessarily invalid. The outcome depends on the disclosure, wording, facts and applicable law. Report a loss promptly to the relevant insurers and provide accurate information.

Separately confirm permitted use, lease or condominium requirements and business licensing. Insurance arrangements do not replace that compliance review.

Get a clear picture of both home and business protection

The most useful insurance review starts with the activities you actually carry out, then matches each exposure to the relevant protection.
