Price, appearance and features matter when choosing a car. Insurance belongs in that comparison too. Two vehicles with similar purchase prices can produce different premiums, and waiting until pickup day to ask may put pressure on your budget.
A-Z Insurance recommends checking insurance before signing a purchase agreement or paying a deposit. Compare it alongside financing or lease payments, fuel, maintenance and parking so you can make a more informed choice.
Why similar cars can have different premiums
Insurers consider the vehicle, driving history, location, mileage, coverage, deductibles and their own claims experience. Even two drivers with clean records may receive different quotes when their other circumstances differ. FSRA on premium factors
Vehicle repair and replacement costs, theft exposure and claims performance also matter. A lower purchase price does not necessarily produce a lower premium, and the badge or age of a vehicle is not enough to predict its cost to insure.
New technology does not guarantee a discount
Driver-assistance features may be valuable to you, but insurers also consider claims outcomes and repair costs. Complex equipment, parts and repair procedures need to be assessed alongside safety performance. A longer equipment list does not guarantee cheaper coverage.
Insurance Bureau of Canada’s How Cars Measure Up tool compares vehicles using claims frequency and cost information. It can help you research a shortlist, but it is not a personalized quote based on your drivers, address and coverage needs. IBC’s vehicle-comparison tool announcement
Compare candidates on the same basis
Choose two or three vehicles that meet your practical needs, then request quotes using consistent assumptions. Supply each vehicle’s exact VIN where possible. If it is not yet available, provide the year, make, model, trim and powertrain, and confirm the quote against the actual vehicle later.
A VIN identifies the specific vehicle and helps prevent different versions being confused. When comparing insurers for one car, use the same VIN. When comparing different cars, use each car’s own VIN. IBC’s VIN guide
Keep these other details consistent:
- Actual drivers, address and parking location
- Vehicle use, commute and expected annual kilometres
- Third-party liability limits and accident benefits selections
- Collision, Comprehensive and other vehicle-damage coverage, with matching deductibles
- Optional endorsements, such as temporary transportation or a depreciation waiver
- Effective date and payment arrangement
For a financed or leased vehicle, check the contract’s insurance requirements before reducing coverage. If one quote costs less because it includes fewer protections or a larger deductible, list that difference clearly rather than treating the prices as directly equivalent.
A current quote is not a five-year guarantee
A quote helps you budget for the circumstances presented today. Future rates and changes to drivers, location, usage or coverage may affect renewals. There is no sound basis for a universal monthly savings figure or a promise that a five-minute enquiry will save money for five years.
If you expect to keep a vehicle for several years, use its current annual premium as a starting point and leave room for changes. Compare the total annual cost and payment conditions as well as the monthly amount. Ask about quote validity, underwriting conditions and information still needed.
Confirm insurance before pickup
Once you choose the vehicle, give your broker the final VIN and pickup time. Confirm that coverage has been arranged for the correct effective time and obtain the appropriate proof of insurance. An estimate alone does not activate a policy, and you should not assume an existing policy automatically handles the new vehicle without checking. FSRA on working with your broker or insurer
