Some insurer apps display policies, digital insurance cards or claims tools. Other features collect driving data that affects your premium. Installing an app and enrolling in a driving-data pricing program are not necessarily the same step. Understand what you are agreeing to before joining.
Your premium may go down or up
Usage-based insurance can factor driving habits or vehicle use into pricing. Enrolment incentives, scoring measures, adjustment ranges and timing vary. There is no universal promise of a 10–20% download discount followed by 20–30% renewal savings. FSRA’s explanation of usage-based insurance.
For example, Intact’s myDrive terms say premiums may increase, decrease or remain unchanged. Actual adjustment ranges depend on the region, program version and applicable rules. Intact’s myDrive explanation. This is a product-specific example, not a description of every insurance app.
Put safe driving ahead of the score
Keep an appropriate following distance, drive smoothly and obey speed limits for safety. Never delay necessary braking to avoid a recorded hard-braking event. Do not interpret “within 10% of the limit” as permission to speed. Road rules and actual conditions come before an app score. Ontario’s driver’s handbook.
Set things up before driving. Review scores, correct trips and handle notifications only after parking safely.
Ask six privacy questions
- What is collected: location, time, speed, phone use, braking or other sensor data?
- Is it used only for pricing, or for claims, product development or other purposes too?
- Which insurer staff, service providers or other recipients can use it?
- Where is it stored, and for how long?
- How can you correct an inaccurate trip or one recorded while you were a passenger?
- Can previously collected information affect renewals after you withdraw or delete the app?
Consult the actual privacy notice and participation terms. Do not assume all brokers are unable to see data, or that withdrawal immediately deletes it. Intact, for example, states that information collected while enrolled may continue to affect premiums after withdrawal. Its terms and privacy notice.
Compare the whole policy
Request quotes with and without participation and ask what happens after an introductory incentive ends. Compare limits, deductibles, vehicle damage coverage and endorsements too, rather than just the largest advertised discount.
If you change phones, permissions change or trips stop recording, check the program instructions and contact technical support. Do not disable required permissions and assume the same discount will continue.
