Ontario’s accident benefits rules changed on July 1, 2026. When you review your next renewal, look beyond the premium: check which benefits you have, their limits and the people who qualify for them.

That review is particularly useful for households sharing a vehicle, long-time automatic renewals and drivers starting rideshare or delivery work. This guide reflects official information checked on October 11, 2026.

What remains mandatory?

Accident benefits can help with eligible needs after an injury in a vehicle collision, regardless of who caused it. They serve a different purpose from vehicle damage or third-party liability coverage.

Standard medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits remain mandatory. Other accident benefits are optional. This change concerns the accident benefits section; it does not mean the rest of Ontario’s compulsory auto insurance requirements have disappeared. FSRA’s reform overview

The optional menu includes income replacement, non-earner, caregiver, housekeeping and home maintenance, lost educational expenses, visitors’ expenses, damage to personal items, death and funeral benefits. Ask about increased medical, rehabilitation and attendant care limits, dependant care and indexation as well. Each benefit has its own eligibility rules. FSRA’s driver fact sheet

Are existing benefits automatically removed?

No. Existing policies renewing on or after July 1, 2026 must carry forward the relevant benefits and previous limits unless the named insured and insurer agree in writing to decline or change them. Written agreement can also allow eligible midterm changes. Ontario’s Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule, section 28

There is no universal rule that every existing customer must sign a new form to keep those benefits. Check the renewal documents and retain written confirmation of any changes you choose. If you are buying a new policy, review the available selections before accepting the quote.

Continuation of benefits does not freeze your premium. Compare the coverage and limits as well as the price.

Who qualifies for optional accident benefits?

FSRA identifies these eligible groups:

  • The named insured
  • The named insured’s spouse
  • Dependants of the named insured and of the named insured’s spouse
  • People specified in the policy as drivers of the insured automobile

This change to who is covered took effect on July 1, 2026, regardless of the policy’s renewal date. Being a relative, sharing an address or borrowing the car with permission does not by itself establish eligibility. Dependency has an applicable definition, so have your broker check the household details and listed drivers. FSRA’s reform questions and answers

A friend who does not qualify for optional benefits under your policy should not assume they have no accident coverage anywhere. Their own or a family policy, eligibility for standard benefits and other applicable coverage need separate consideration.

Start with your household’s needs

Think about the work each person does, paid and unpaid. If an injury prevented someone from earning an income or caring for a family member, what would the household need to replace? Who would manage daily chores or arrange additional care?

Students, retirees, employees and self-employed people may have different priorities. Bring workplace or private benefits information to the review. Ask about waiting periods, limits, exclusions and whether coverage continues after a job change. Avoid removing a car insurance option solely because another plan has a similar name.

A useful comparison shows the expenses each plan addresses and what you would still need to fund yourself. Ask your broker to explain the available limits or bundles in that context.

Rideshare and delivery work need a separate check

The reform does not replace the insurance arrangements required for ridesharing, deliveries or business use. Before starting, tell your broker which platform you use, how you use the vehicle and how often. Confirm when your personal policy and any platform policy apply. FSRA maintains information on approved rideshare, carshare and delivery insurance products. FSRA’s rideshare and delivery guidance

Describe ordinary commuting separately from paid passenger trips or deliveries, rather than guessing how an insurer will classify them.

Questions to take to your renewal review

  • Which accident benefits and limits do I currently have, and which are continuing?
  • What would I need to pay myself if I declined or reduced an option?
  • Are household members and actual drivers correctly identified and eligible?
  • What injury conditions apply to caregiver, housekeeping and home maintenance benefits?
  • How do my other benefits plans fit with this coverage?
  • When would a requested change take effect, and how will it be confirmed in writing?
