Work from home, use public transit or keep a second car that rarely leaves the driveway? A mileage-based payment plan may be worth comparing with a traditional policy. CAA currently markets MyPace to drivers travelling fewer than 12,000 kilometres a year. CAA’s official overview.

Not driving does not mean paying nothing

MyPace combines a base premium with mileage purchased in 1,000-kilometre blocks. You pay the base amount and first block when enrolling, with further blocks automatically replenished under the plan. Non-kilometre costs remain even during periods when the vehicle is unused. Coverage is not switched on and off for each trip. Ontario MyPace payment details.

Ask for a clear breakdown of the base premium, block price, payment schedule and any applicable charges. Comparing one month’s debit can be misleading if that month includes a mileage reload.

Estimate your actual driving

Include commuting, errands, family trips and longer journeys. Compare estimated annual costs under low, typical and higher-mileage scenarios against a traditional policy with equivalent coverage.

Revisit the comparison if your workplace, household drivers or travel plans change. Low mileage does not guarantee the lowest price, and reaching a particular number of licensed years does not guarantee a sudden premium drop.

Check vehicle and technology requirements

MyPace requires a compatible in-car device; not every vehicle qualifies. Confirm compatibility and installation requirements using the exact vehicle or VIN. Usage can be viewed in the app or online portal, so a smartphone is not the only option. CAA’s Ontario FAQs.

Ask when reloads are charged, how vehicle changes or withdrawal work, whom to contact about incorrect mileage, and what happens to prices and unused kilometres at renewal. Read the current terms supplied with your quote.

Mileage billing and driving scores are different

A mileage payment plan is different from a program that adjusts premiums for braking, acceleration or other driving behaviour. Read the product’s data notice rather than assuming its device records only a total distance.

Compare the actual coverage too: liability limits, deductibles, vehicle damage and optional benefits. A different payment method does not automatically include every endorsement you need.
