“First accident forgiveness” and “ticket forgiveness” can sound broader than they are. These products generally concern an insurer’s rating treatment. They do not erase liability, fines, demerit points or existing records.

They are also not mandatory add-ons that every driver can buy or use for every incident. Review eligibility, scope, price and continuation conditions first.

What accident forgiveness protects

Accident Forgiveness or a similarly named product can prevent a first eligible at-fault accident from affecting the relevant premium rating. It generally must be in force before the accident, with the driver, vehicle and circumstances meeting its conditions. It does not change fault or automatically waive deductibles and other policy requirements. Intact’s accident forgiveness explanation

Ask how “first” is defined, which drivers qualify, what record is required and how protection continues after use. One insurer’s product name or eligibility rules should not be applied to the whole market.

It does not freeze the entire renewal price

Protection from accident-related rating does not guarantee an unchanged total premium. Address, vehicle, mileage, coverage and broader rate changes may still affect the price. Ask your broker to separate the accident’s treatment from other changes. FSRA’s premium-factor guide

A blanket promise of six to ten unaffected years is also inappropriate. Future renewals, further accidents and changed driver information depend on the applicable rules and policy.

Forgiveness does not automatically transfer to another insurer

An accident forgiven for rating by one company remains part of the relevant insurance history. TD Insurance explains that a forgiven claim can still appear in an insurance-history report and be considered by a new insurer. TD Insurance on forgiveness and switching

Answer accident-history questions accurately when shopping around, and confirm that the new quote includes the complete information. Do not assume that forgiveness means the event no longer needs to be disclosed.

Minor conviction protection is a separate product

Products such as Minor Conviction Protection or Minor Conviction Protector may protect the rating impact of a qualifying minor driving conviction. Aviva describes a first-minor-conviction product and directs customers to confirm eligibility. Covered offences, drivers and permitted uses depend on the actual terms. A ticket and a final conviction are different stages. Insurance protection does not cancel a ticket, remove government driving records or eliminate legal penalties. Ontario driver records may include convictions, suspensions and reinstatements. Ontario’s driving-record guide

If an incident results in both an at-fault accident and a conviction, one protection does not automatically replace the other. Serious, criminal or otherwise excluded offences should not be assumed eligible merely because they are a first occurrence.

Six questions for your broker

  • Am I eligible, and what driving record is required?
  • Does the protection attach to a vehicle or driver, and are young or occasional drivers included?
  • Which accidents or minor convictions qualify, and what is excluded?
  • What happens after a second incident?
  • What changes if I replace the car, remove the endorsement or switch insurers?
  • What is the actual annual price, and where does the final policy confirm it?

There is no universal $80–$90 annual cost or guaranteed saving. Assess the quoted price together with the conditions before deciding.
