“Can I drive 60 in a 50 zone without a problem?” Do not treat a rumoured enforcement threshold as legal permission. The posted limit is the maximum; poor weather, visibility or traffic conditions may require a lower speed. Ontario’s official driver’s handbook.

The original article discussed a possible camera ban and an alleged 11 km/h trigger. It should not be used as current driving guidance. This update reflects official information checked in October 2026.

Municipal automated speed enforcement ended on November 14, 2025

Ontario states that, from November 14, 2025, municipalities may no longer issue Provincial Offences Act tickets or administrative penalty orders for speeding captured by municipal automated speed enforcement cameras. Ontario’s current explanation.

Toronto now describes its Automated Speed Enforcement page as a reference to the former program. This change concerns municipal automated speed enforcement. It does not mean all traffic enforcement or every type of traffic camera has ended. Toronto’s program status.

Earlier penalties are not automatically cancelled

Toronto says penalty orders for violations before the cessation date remain valid. Follow the payment, review or dispute instructions and deadlines on your notice. Do not ignore an earlier notice because the camera program ended.

There is no universal allowance to speed

Enforcement practices, receiving a ticket and the legal speed limit are different questions. We do not recommend driving a fixed number of kilometres or percentage above the limit.

Watch for changes in posted limits, school areas and construction zones. Allow enough travel time and choose a speed suitable for conditions. Following traffic is not a reason to exceed the limit.

What about insurance?

Identify the type of penalty and whether it involves a conviction recorded against a driver, then ask your broker about its effect. Do not treat a former camera administrative penalty and a police-issued driver speeding ticket as interchangeable. No general rule can promise a particular percentage increase, or no insurance impact at all.
