Does Your Sump Pump Have Backup Power? An Ontario Equipment Checklist

Check backup power, backwater-valve operation, testing records and policy conditions rather than relying on installation alone.

Having flood-protection equipment is not the same as knowing it will work. This practical checklist focuses on existing equipment, not municipal subsidy eligibility.

Why revisit it now?

IBC’s October 22, 2026 release estimated more than $3.7 billion in Canadian insured severe-weather losses during summer 2026, including flooding in Niagara. [1] This is context for reviewing preparedness, not a new insurance rule or a prediction of your premium.

1. Check the backup, not just the main pump

A sump pump moves water out of a basement pit. A second pump using the same electricity supply may also stop during an outage. Federal guidance recommends backup pumping and an alternate power source. It calls for an annual full-pump test and backup-pump checks two to five times a year, following the model’s instructions or professional advice. [2] Do not improvise electrical work or test equipment in unsafe conditions.

2. Know what the valve does

A backwater valve helps prevent wastewater flowing back into your home; it is not a substitute for a sump pump. Ask a licensed plumber about the right configuration and maintenance. Federal guidance recommends avoiding high-water-use activities during heavy rain and explains that a valve alarm can warn when the valve closes, helping prevent water used indoors from backing up. [3]

3. Keep a simple equipment record

Our suggested record is practical, not a universal insurer-required form:

4. Keep the insurance question separate

Equipment does not itself add coverage. For example, Aviva lists sewer-backup and overland-water protection as optional, with availability and eligibility varying by province. [4] Ask your own broker which water protections your policy includes, and confirm limits, deductibles, exclusions and any equipment conditions. Do not assume that installation guarantees a discount or payment of a claim.

A-Z Insurance can help review your policy questions. A qualified contractor should assess the equipment. This is general information, not a design or installation specification; actual policy wording governs coverage.
