When Should Ontario Drivers Remove Winter Tires in Spring?
Check weather, tire suitability and your own policy’s winter-tire discount requirements before booking a spring changeover.
Before booking a spring tire change, check two things: whether conditions suit the change and whether your winter-tire insurance discount has a required installation period.
A date circulated online may not apply to your policy. Equally, a claim that removing winter tires early always results in denied coverage is too broad. Weather, equipment and insurance requirements need separate attention.
Discount dates and driving conditions serve different purposes
Ontario insurers must offer a winter-tire discount. Confirm the amount, eligible tires and required usage period with your actual insurer; there is no single discount percentage this article can promise for everyone. FSRA’s auto insurance savings guidance
A friend’s policy, an old promotional screenshot or another insurer’s dates may not reflect your current terms. This guide therefore does not reproduce an unverified insurer-by-insurer date chart. Check your renewal documents, winter-tire declaration or current written instructions from your broker.
If the dates are unclear, ask for the installation deadline, earliest removal date and any requirement to keep eligible tires fitted throughout that period. Save the response rather than relying on memory.
Use 7°C as guidance, not a legal deadline
Transport Canada says all-season and summer tires begin losing elasticity below 7°C, reducing traction. It recommends winter tires on all wheel positions. Transport Canada on winter tires
That temperature is a practical reference, not a province-wide legal changeover date. One warm afternoon does not settle the decision. Consider sustained conditions, overnight and early-morning temperatures, frost or snow forecasts, and the routes you expect to drive.
Northern and southern Ontario can have very different conditions. Mid-April is not a universal safe date either. Even after the insurance usage period ends, assess road conditions and ask a tire professional about the appropriate equipment and timing for your vehicle.
Does early removal automatically mean a denied claim?
The removal date alone cannot determine every claim under every policy. Failure to meet discount conditions may require a discount or premium adjustment. Other consequences depend on the information supplied, policy wording, applicable law and the facts of a loss. Discount eligibility and a claim decision should not be treated as interchangeable.
Keep insurance information accurate and tell your broker or insurer about relevant changes. If you have already removed the tires early, provide the actual date and ask what needs updating instead of continuing to rely on an inaccurate declaration. FSRA on working with your broker or insurer
If an accident has occurred, report it accurately and retain tire and service records. Let the insurer assess the claim rather than assuming it must be denied and failing to report it.
Check the tire itself
Do not rely solely on a product being called “all-weather” or “all-season.” Check its markings, specifications and manufacturer’s instructions. Transport Canada explains that the mountain-and-snowflake symbol identifies tires meeting specific snow-traction performance requirements. Suitability for your car and eligibility under an insurer’s discount rules still need checking. Transport Canada’s tire guide
Have a professional check tread, damage, pressure and the vehicle’s recommended specifications. Avoid mismatched tire combinations and follow the vehicle and tire manufacturers’ guidance.
A short pre-appointment checklist
- Review weather for your local area and planned routes, including overnight lows
- Confirm your own policy’s discount conditions and dates
- Check the model, markings and condition of all four tires
- Keep purchase and service receipts, including installation and removal dates
- Ask your broker how to update information if your plans differ from your declaration

Winter Is Coming to Canada: When Should You Switch to Winter Tires, and Can You Save on Car Insurance?
Know when to switch to winter tires, what to check before winter driving, and how to confirm your eligibility for an Ontario auto insurance discount.
❄️ A-Z Insurance | A Practical Guide to Car Insurance in Canada
🚗 As temperatures drop, Ontario drivers are getting ready for winter tires again.
Many people think they only need winter tires once it starts snowing. In fact, when temperatures consistently fall to around 7°C or below, it is time to start considering a switch to winter tires. Ordinary all-season tires gradually become harder in low temperatures, which can reduce their grip.
Along with helping you drive more safely, installing suitable winter tires may qualify you for an auto insurance discount. Here are a few things worth knowing before you change your tires.
❄️ 1. When is the best time to switch to winter tires?
A simple guide is to watch the temperature, rather than waiting for snow.
When temperatures stay at 7°C or below, you can start arranging your winter tire change. You do not need to wait for the first major snowfall.
📌 Booking ahead has another benefit: it can help you avoid the rush at repair shops after temperatures drop.
🚙 2. What are the benefits of winter tires?
Winter tires use rubber compounds and tread designs suited to low temperatures. They generally provide better grip and handling in cold, snowy and icy conditions.
Installing winter tires can help:
- Improve traction on winter roads.
- Improve vehicle stability and handling on snow and ice.
- Shorten braking distances under suitable conditions.
⚠️ A reminder: Winter tires cannot eliminate winter driving risks. In snowy or icy weather, you still need to slow down, leave more space behind the vehicle ahead, and avoid sudden braking or steering.
💰 3. Can winter tires help you save on car insurance?
Yes. In Ontario, auto insurers must offer a discount for vehicles fitted with winter tires that meet their eligibility requirements.
The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) advises drivers to ask their insurer or insurance broker about eligibility and discount arrangements.
Discount amounts, tire requirements and reporting procedures may differ between insurers.
After installing winter tires, we suggest that you:
- Contact your insurance broker or insurer to confirm whether you qualify.
- Have your tire information and installation date ready.
- Check that the discount has been correctly applied to your policy.
Do not assume the discount will take effect automatically after installation. It is best to confirm.
🛞 4. Three things to remember when changing your tires
1. Replace all four tires together
Transport Canada recommends installing four matching winter tires to help maintain your vehicle's handling and stability. Do not replace only the front or rear tires.
2. Check the tire markings and condition
When shopping, look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the tire's sidewall. Check the tread depth and look for signs of aging or damage.
3. Check tire pressure regularly
Tire pressure can fall as the temperature drops. Follow your vehicle manufacturer's guidance when checking tire pressure, especially before a long trip.
🛡️ 5. Winter driving: safety and insurance coverage both matter
Installing winter tires is an important part of preparing for winter driving. It cannot replace good driving habits or guarantee that a claim will be covered after an accident.
Coverage and claim outcomes depend on your policy, the circumstances of the accident and the applicable terms.
Along with changing your tires ahead of time, we suggest reviewing your auto insurance before winter. Make sure your vehicle details, driver information and policy arrangements are accurate.
🤝 A reminder from A-Z Insurance
Canadian winter road conditions can change considerably. Checking your vehicle ahead of time, switching to winter tires promptly and understanding your insurance coverage can help you prepare for winter driving with greater confidence.
