Four Travel Insurance Misunderstandings to Clear Up Before You Go

Look beyond a package name and price. Four common misunderstandings explain which coverage questions to ask before travelling.

After flights and accommodation are booked, travel insurance can feel like the last box to tick. Yet eligibility, trip length, pre-existing-condition rules and the benefits selected can make a substantial difference.

You do not need to memorize every insurance term. Start with these four misunderstandings, then ask questions using your actual itinerary.

1. “I'm healthy, so I don't need to consider insurance”

Good health does not rule out an accident or unexpected illness. For Canadian residents travelling abroad, provincial or territorial health coverage may pay little or none of the medical bill. Do not treat it as complete overseas protection. Government of Canada travel-insurance guidance

Medical, trip cancellation, interruption, delay and baggage benefits also need separate checks. Buying one does not establish that the others are included. Manulife's travel-insurance overview

A prepaid, non-refundable trip may make cancellation protection worth considering. But wanting to cancel is different from satisfying a covered reason. Check the triggers, purchase timing and limitations. Allianz's explanation of covered cancellation reasons

2. “It's complicated, so my broker can read it for me”

A broker can explain the policy, but you still need to disclose your health, itinerary and planned activities accurately and understand the key conditions.

Start with eligibility, effective and expiry dates, deductibles and exclusions. For pre-existing conditions, ask how “stable” is defined and how changes in medication, treatment, symptoms or investigations affect the answer. Definitions and time periods vary by product. Ask for the relevant clause and, where possible, a written explanation. If health or travel plans change after purchase, check again. An earlier quote is not approval of every later circumstance.

3. “There are too many choices, so the cheapest is close enough”

Compare on the same basis: the same traveller, destinations and duration, with comparable benefits, limits and deductibles. Then compare the price.

If a credit card, employer or pension plan already provides travel coverage, retrieve the certificate and review the restrictions. Ask who is insured, the maximum trip length and the conditions that apply to your journey. CAA's travel-insurance checklist

Describe cruises, sports, extended stays and multiple destinations. Check travel advisories and relevant exclusions too. A policy that works for a friend may not fit your trip. Allianz's overview of common exclusions

4. “Insurance only reimburses me after I get home”

Some policies include assistance with finding care, treatment arrangements or claims. Some offer virtual care. The availability of networks, languages, clinical teams and services depends on the product and circumstances; it should not be assumed worldwide under every policy.

Direct billing is not guaranteed either. A medical facility may require payment up front, so understand the payment arrangements and keep your receipts. An example of assistance and direct-billing provisions in an Allianz comprehensive policy

Save your own policy's assistance number and check how to call from abroad. If immediate emergency help is needed, contact local emergency services and obtain care first, then contact the assistance provider as circumstances allow. Do not delay emergency treatment for insurance approval.

Five questions before departure

  • Do my status, age, dates and destinations meet this policy's eligibility rules?
  • Which medical, cancellation, interruption, delay and baggage benefits did I actually buy?
  • What restrictions affect existing conditions, activities or coverage I already hold?
  • Who do I call, and which follow-up arrangements require approval?
  • Which documents should I keep, and what are the notification and submission deadlines?

Clear answers are more useful than a reassuring package name. To discuss travel-insurance options, contact A-Z Insurance at 905-707-2929 or info@azinsure.ca.
